Cleaning the barnBiosecurity — What is it?

We are all familiar with security. A locked door or computer password provides security to your home and your computer. “Bio-security” means not only a locked door but additional security to keep out bugs (disease-carrying organism such as bacteria and viruses).

Why shower before going into a barn?

Pig diseases can be carried from place to place without you knowing or being affected. Manure on your footwear, bacteria on your skin, even dirt under your fingernails can contain germs.

Can I get sick?

NO, and if you have a cold or cough it will not infect the pigs either. Although some diseases can be transmitted between species, this is very uncommon between pigs and people. However you should always wash your hands after handling any animal and before eating.

Help keep our pigs healthy!

All visitors and employees shower, change into clean clothes and boots before entering the barn. In the gallery you are in a biosecure area that is separate from the animal’s airspace. Our simulated biosecurity showers make the point without getting you all wet!
